I am reviewing this as a paying guest who very much likes this area for photographing wildlife. The SWRS is located in a truly awesome setting partially surrounded by colorful ryalite mountains and mixed scrub oak and pine forest. It is somewhat more remotely located away from the small town of Portal.
The room was not very comfortable.
Furniture and mattress need updating. As another reviewer stated, there is no ac but only a ceiling fan for warm nights. Most importantly, things are dirty. The room should be more thoroughly cleaned. The manager had another couple and us booked into the same cabin! Fortunately, this was corrected by others on duty.
Food served cafeteria and family style was satisfactory to sometimes very palatable. Obviously, not many choices
but they cater to dietary preferences. Do not expect a leisurely meal time, however, especially if starting at the rear of the line. The cook and student assistants want to finish and wash the dishes.
The room is relatively expensive considering its condition. Though it was partly a holiday, the laundry in the dormitory building was piled high with dirty linens. Acknowledging its wonderful location, I feel the SWRS deserves better maintenance.

I came for a herp class and it was phenomenal. Lots of biodiversity. The food for breakfast lunch and dinner were very good. Only negative is that there is no AC in the dorms but it doesn’t get too hot in them

This is an amazing place to do research out of. I was a co-instructor for the course Fungi of the Sky Islands this past month. The SWRS has great classroom facilities and an amazing amount of infrastructure for such an out of the way place. Staff if friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. For non-researchers there is a little gift shop that serves coffee and there are feeders up that attract hummingbirds.

We did a day visit and short hike. The information center/gift shop staff were friendly and we spent some time chatting with them and several guests.

Ridiculously good environment to relax, bird watch, and hike. The most biodiverse place in all of North America.

We stayed here for two nights while at a meeting. The rooms are clean, a bit spartan (no shampoo or hair dryers provided) and meals in the communal dining hall are part of the package. The food was adequate, breakfast being the best meal. Lovely setting with stunning view of the mountains. Peace and quiet. Have stayed here several times and it's always been good.

Great arrangement of hummingbird feeders serving a variety of customers!? We were casual visitors out for birding and found it a very welcoming compound. Amazing nature gift shop on site managed by a charming lady and her tiny animated adorable dog. Large centrally located information board with lots of local info, naturalist's interests, Classes, volunteer opportunities and ongoing projects at research facility. Great spot.
