I went here on a weekday, and even though I didn't get to tour the interior of the observatory, the view as well as the drive up was nothing short of superb. It also seemed as if people simply don't visit on weekdays, as I drove for miles without encountering any traffic and was the only one at the observatory (there weren't even staff members!) Nevertheless, I was able to enjoy the tranquility as well as the views overlooking SF and neighboring mountains despite a low cloud ceiling that day. The roads after the observatory also offer great view of the nearby mountain ranges, so it'd be a good idea to drive a few miles further before turning back

TLDR: Great retreat into nature from the bustling Bay Area. I highly recommend visiting during weekdays if you are able.

I recently rode up to Lick Observatory on Mount Hamilton with my cousin, and it was a fantastic experience overall. The drive itself was a highlight, with twisty roads that kept things interesting and plenty of scenic stops along the way. We even spotted two horses on the way up, which was a nice surprise! Once at the top, the view was amazing, especially on a clear day – you can see for miles around. The observatory, though, was a bit underwhelming at this time; there's just a brief walk-through section that goes over the history, so it felt more like a quick stop than a full activity. But if you're into scenic rides and don't mind a bit of quiet history, it’s worth checking out for the journey and the views alone!

I recently revisited the Lick Observatory after 20 years, and it was an amazing experience to see how much has changed while still preserving the awe I felt during my first visit. The stunning views of the Bay Area are still breathtaking, and the historical significance of the observatory remains just as fascinating. Seeing the telescope up close again was a wonderful reminder of the importance of space exploration and astronomy. Highly recommended!

First off, getting here is quite the trip. The road has lots of curves and sharp turns and no guard rails majority of the way up the mountain. If you’re prone to motion sickness, bring your hand sanitizer… IYKYK. However, once you arrive, the panoramic views make it all worth it!

We attended the evening tour—the sunset was magnificent, and the city lights and starry night will take your breath away. Allan was a wonderful tour guide, accompanied with Alina and they were very knowledgeable and stayed engaged with the guests the entire time. You get to tour the observatories and other facilities and learn a lot about the background history of James Lick.

It was so cool to actually be inside the dome and see the telescope being operated. We had the chance to look through the James Lick telescope and view a pair of stars - 95 Hercules.

Such an amazing experience overall. Definitely add to your itinerary and clear your evening!

It's hard to imagine anyone giving Lick Observatory anything less than a 5-star review! Set high up on one of the peaks of Mount Hamilton, this destination is a must-visit, by ANYONE AND EVERYONE!

The drive up to the observatory is an adventure in itself, with twisty roads that really test your driving skills. The narrow roads climb steadily, offering stunning views that prepare you for the spectacle ahead.

At the summit, Lick Observatory stands as a landmark of historical significance and a hub of cutting-edge astronomical research, dating back to the late 18th century. Among its collection of telescopes is the Great Lick 120 inch Refractor, once the largest refracting telescope in the world, and still a marvel of historical and scientific importance.

Nighttime visits are especially magical. The observatory’s summer stargazing programs allow guests to peer through telescopes at distant galaxies and stars, with expert explanations from the observatory’s knowledgeable staff. It’s an educational and intimate experience that connects visitors with the vast cosmos.

Whether you’re a stargazing enthusiast or simply looking for a unique experience, Lick Observatory is an excellent choice. It’s a perfect spot for families, dates, friends, or even solo adventurers. You won’t be disappointed.

A few tips for your visit:
1. Drive carefully. The roads up the mountain attract fast drivers who can make the narrow, two-lane road tricky, especially at parts where it's impossible for wide cars to pass without crossing into the oncoming lane.
2. Watch for unprotected turns along cliffs with 1,000+ foot drops. If you're heading to the observatory, stay alert and cautious.
3. Share the road respectfully with cyclists, who are vulnerable and move slowly. The road includes several blind turns, so when in doubt, slow down. There’s no need to rush—with so much beauty and excitement ahead, the drive is part of the adventure.
